Major update on Kalvin Phillips’ potential Leeds United return

Leeds United fans have been burnt frequently in recent years by their most beloved players leaving.

At the end of last year Archie Gray, a member of a Leeds United family dynasty, left the club following their inability to secure promotion and in years gone by we have seen others leave.

Often, relegation can be a devastating blow to a club’s ability to keep hold of their best players and when Leeds were relegated from the Premier League they lost some of their star men such as Raphinha who headed over to Barcelona.

But one of the most disappointing departures of recent years has been England international Kalvin Phillips heading over to Manchester City.

Despite winning both the Premier League and Champions League, it has been an ill-fated move with a lack of game time costing Phillips a spot in the England Euros squad. He also endured a difficult loan spell with West Ham United and is now trying to rebuild his career at Ipswich Town.

Despite this recent move, it was reported last week that Phillips wanted to leave and even that Town could end his loan agreement.

Not only did reports claim that Phillips wanted to leave, but they claimed that he wanted to return to Elland Road, especially given the struggles they are enduring in midfield following injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

However, there has now been a major update in his potential Elland Road return coming from Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna, who has helped his side impress against the likes of Liverpool and even scoring against Manchester City, after their weekend clash.

“What can I say on that? Proper, proper nonsense,” McKenna said (h/t Leeds Live). “I learned quite a while ago in football that you can write something online and it circulates and gets picked up by quite a lot of media outlets and then it becomes a story. It’s absolute nonsense. There have been no conversations of the like and I think it’s a real, real shame. He had a very good game.”

So Leeds fans’ hopes of a return from Phillips seem to have been snuffed out.
