Legendary Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has named the greatest Premier League matches he has called live.
Tyler has commentated on the Premier League since day one and is still the main voice of the Sky Sports commentary box today.
Naming a top 10 from the hundreds of games he has seen live must have been no easy feat, but in February’s edition of Four Four Two the ‘voice of the Premier League’ did just that.
Included on his list was a Leeds United game, though it is probably not the one you would expect.
Forget the 4-4 draw at Everton in 1999 and the Viduka-inspired 4-3 win over Liverpool a year later, Tyler opted to include this season’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
The action-packed game against the Citizens at Elland Road in October was the lowest scoring game Tyler included in his feature, he did go some way to explaining his choice though.
He wrote in the magazine: “People might be surprised about this, and maybe it won’t be remembered because of the scoreline, but those who saw it will never forget it. Two visionaries, Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa, were just so full of attacking ambition. Every time the ball turned over, the other team went straight on the offensive.
“Apparently Bielsa said he didn’t feel Leeds played very well, but that view wasn’t shared up in the commentary box! Myself and Gary Neville kept thinking, ‘Wow, here they come again, isn’t this fantastic?’
“Neither team deserved to lose. I wish the game hadn’t finished.”
The other games Tyler included were: Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle (1996), Newcastle 5-0 Man Utd (1996), Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal (1999), Tottenham 3-5 Man Utd (2001), Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham (2008), Leicester 3-1 Everton (2016), Tottenham 2-1 Man Utd (2017), Man City 3-2 QPR (2012).
