Leeds United have had a good crop of players emerge from youth level in the last few seasons. A policy from Victor Orta’s time saw an influx of young, high potential players.
Crysencio Summerville, Pascal Struijk, Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt are among some of the names the club signed. The plan was to put them in the U18s or U21s and help them progress to the first team. Over the last two seasons a few broke into Daniel Farke’s plans.
Mateo Joseph is one of the most exciting talents at Leeds United currently. The youngster made his debut in 2022 and has not looked back since. Joseph’s brace against Chelsea in the FA Cup really made his reputation grow.

The 21-year old had his best season in the first team this year. In the Championship this season, he had three goals and three assists making 11 starts. He also became a prominent player at U21 level with Spain. Joseph’s performances this campaign have not gone unnoticed, Real Betis are very interested in signing the forward.
Betis tried to sign the 21-year old in January, but he remained for the rest of the season. In recent weeks, the La Liga side have returned to make another effort to sign Mateo Joseph – they are willing to pay £12.75million for him.
Joseph is under a long term contract at Elland Road, and he spoke on his future plans last month:
“It’s not been the best season on the pitch,” Joseph said on Papa Pinicius’ YouTube channel.
“If we get promoted, it will be good for everyone.
“I know that next season will be better than this one, definitely individually.”
Joseph could stay this summer
The forward gave this interview before Leeds were promoted and won the Championship, but the sentiment remains the same. Mateo Joseph expects himself to be at the club for the near future. Based off the back of this campaign, the club need to assess if keeping the youngster around is the best decision for him.
Betis are ready to sign Mateo Joseph, with a huge fee. Leeds United now have a decision to make.
