Samu Omorodion is off to an impressive start with FC Porto this 2024-25 season, netting seven goals in his first seven appearances across all competitions. Nonetheless, the young goal-scorer must be looking over his shoulder with Mateo Joseph providing competition.
Omorodion was a sought-after player this past summer transfer window, and Chelsea nearly secured the youngster. However, the transfer collapsed because of a significant problem finalizing the 20-year-old’s contract, per The Athletic.
Nonetheless, that might have been a blessing in disguise as the move to Porto has allowed the player to flourish and become a potential No. 9 for Spain’s national team in the coming years. Still, Joseph appears ready for the challenge of fighting for the starting striker on the senior team.
Mateo Joseph talks healthy competition with Samu Omorodion
In an interview with OKDiario, Joseph noted the healthy competition that he is having with Omorodion. Moreover, the Leeds standout revealed whether he would see the two of them soon sharing the dressing room with the senior team.
“We get along very well,” Joseph told the Spanish outlet. “He is more interested because I beat him at FIFA. We even sit together on the bus. And the truth is that we talk a lot about many situations on the pitch. Even in the match. How one or the other would have executed.
“I am very happy that in the same position I have a boy like Samu, who is a very good teammate. When training we always try to give our best. And that is important because we demand more from each other and we are both going to improve…
“I think we could be up to the task [of being the future generation of strikers for Spain’s national team]—Samu and I. With the mentality we have and the qualities, it would be incredible. But we have to take it step by step.
“I’m happy to be where I am right now. And try to help the team as much as possible. The truth is that it would be the greatest thing in a footballer’s career, to be able to defend his country at an absolute level.”
