Leeds United’s defensive dilemma unfolds in transfer season

Maximilian Wöber in action during a Leeds United pre-match training

Maximilian Wöber returned to Leeds United after the end of his loan spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Although the defender was expected to move, he stayed and is now registered in the 2024/25 Leeds squad.

He was an unused sub at the opening game against Portsmouth. Wöber is an Austrian national team player and the international baller won’t be keen on spending his time warming the bench in the English second tier.

Daniel Farke and the player have had conversations before the start of the season. The German manager is confident that Max is staying and he would be ready to field him anytime a chance occurs.

Borussia was very keen on signing the defender but financial implications meant they were hoping for a better opportunity to arise. The club’s sporting director has openly accepted their interest in the Austrian defender.

According to Transfer Expert Graeme Bailey, Wöber is more likely to leave the club than the infamous Wilfried Gnonto. The Italian winger has been facing a lot of hate since last year because of his attempted antiques to sanction an exit.

“It’s a bit similar to Gnonto, but I think Wober is more likely to go. I think Farke has said that, there is always a chance that Wober could leave. If he thought he was definitely staying, he is probably starting.”

“He is a brilliant player, him in the Championship would be outstanding. It is one of those where if he stays, wonderful. I think he is more likely to go, though, from what I am hearing. But Leeds aren’t going to let him go for nothing.”

Farke has talked about his conversations with Maximilian but Leeds’ transfer tactics might have hinted at a different conclusion.

“I get the feeling they can play a really important part. He is really desperate to prove his worth. Let’s not celebrate it too much, the actions are more important than the words.”

-Daniel Farke

The German manager believes that the Vienna native can play an important role at the back but United have recently turned up the heat to find new defenders for the club.

Bruno Ogbus is an understandable choice as the 18-year-old can play both as a centre-back and left-back. The full-back spot has been of concern to The 49ers as only three players are up for the role.

But, doubts arose when according to Fabrizio Romano, Leeds United had shown a concrete interest in Chelsea academy graduate Bashir Humphreys.

This might hint at something regarding the defender situation at United. With Wöber surrounded by rumours, only time will define the stayers and leavers.
