Leeds United’s defender to stay as club demands double-digit million fee for transfer

Maximilian Wöber is set to stay at Leeds United

Austrian defender Maximilian Wöber might stay at Leeds United despite Borussia Mönchengladbach’s interest. The defender has been on their radar since his loan at the German outfit.

The club’s Sporting Director Rolan Virkus even admitted interest in the defender.

“We cannot meet Leeds United’s demands and Leeds are not looking for a loan. But we have always found good solutions – and players like Max Wöber sometimes come back onto the market at the very end.”

“Maybe they won’t play a role in their club or they’ll want to go somewhere else because there might be too many in the same position.”

However, both clubs were in disagreement in regards to the type of the deal. Borussia were looking for a loan but Leeds weren’t keen on that prospect.

Gladbach hoped that the defender would come late in the market maybe because of discontent. The director mentioned that he might come back on the market if there are too many players and then the Austrian would want out.

Even if The Whites are ready for a sale it would be in excess of £11 million, a rate for which they’d got Wöber from Salzburg. Although, things have taken a different turn at the moment.

According to German media house BILD, Borussia have started looking for alternatives to the Austrian defender. Reports suggest that The Whites have set a double-digit transfer fee over the defender’s head.

A few months ago Gladbach’s director said that a £15 million tag was too much for the defender. It was the tag Leeds had put up on Maximilian Wöber two months ago.

Now, it looks like the 26-year-old is staying at Elland Road. He might want to fight for his spot considering the competition in the backline but Daniel Farke is ready to welcome him back.

In talks with BBC Radio, Farke said that Max would be more than welcome at Elland Road.

“Max will arrive and start with some testing. Hopefully, also with us in the first team on the pitch. It is important to have these lads back.”

Borussia Mönchengladbach isn’t paying a double-digit million fee for the defender. A loan move would’ve been ideal but Leeds United would like to retain the Austrian defender if not sell him for a high price.
