Middlesbrough win showed Leeds United are on the promotion march

Leeds United moved to the top of the Championship table on Tuesday night when they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Elland Road. If Sheffield United fail to beat Millwall at the Den tonight, the Whites will go into the weekend as the league leaders.

A win over Derby County last weekend helped Leeds to get back to winning ways following a defeat at Blackburn. However, everyone knew that Boro’s visit would be the tougher test for Leeds even if they were playing at home.

Michael Carrick’s side are involved in the playoff race and were the highest goalscorers in the Championship with Leeds going into the game at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

Middlesbrough were not as bad as the scoreline showed and they were definitely in the game until Brenden Aaronson sealed the deal with a goal in stoppage time. However, Leeds were the better team and deserved the three points.

While there are question marks over their away form, Leeds look imperious at home and win against a side of Middlesbrough’s quality showed why they would not repeat last season’s mistakes.

Leeds United look like the real deal this season

The Whites are some very real scars from last season. They scored 90 points but still failed to finish in the top two. The playoff final defeat against Southampton was heartbreaking and it led to a summer of pain.

Leeds had to carry out a painstaking rebuild of the squad after key players left and Daniel Farke has been questioned from time to time this season.

However, Leeds now sit at the top of the league table and are possibly the top favourites to get automatically promoted to the Premier League this season.

The win over Middlesbrough showed Leeds can take on the biggest teams in the league and get the wins, especially when they are at home. There will be bigger challenges but Leeds seem better prepared to handle them than last season.

If Daniel Farke parks his concerns about bringing in new players in January and manages to add to his squad in the winter window, Leeds could be in a stronger position to get promoted.

It is clear Leeds do not want the chaos of the playoffs again this season and ensuring that they are charging towards automatic promotion.

Leeds will look at the busy fixture period with confidence

The Middlesbrough win showed that Leeds can not only compete but beat the top teams in the Championship. They were beaten by Burnley earlier in the season but the team look more settled and confident now.

Leeds United looked composed and confident against a good Boro side that took the game to them and they stood up to the pressure while scoring the goals that won them the game.

However, the Whites will now have to find a way to fix their away form as a record of three wins in nine on the road is not good enough for a side of their quality.

Leeds will get a chance to fix their away form with a trip to Preston but it is during the festive season fixtures that they can get a real chance to sort out their on-the-road woes.

The Yorkshire giants are pushing for promotion and they will not want to give an inch to any of their title rivals during the next few weeks.

Farke will be juggling his squad around to keep the players fresh but he needs to find a way to ensure that his players remain focused during this busy period.

The Middlesbrough win will give them the confidence and the belief that they need as they embark on a consequential run of games in the coming weeks.
