Rhinos stars Harry Newman and Cameron Smith have been named in the Super League Team of The Week following Leeds’ 42-12 win over Wigan Warriors

Electric Newman

Centre, Harry Newman, was undoubtedly going to be in this week’s team, after a spectacular performance on Thursday that included a try, 120 metres made and five tackle busts.

The 22-year-old must be a certainty in Shaun Wane’s England squad for the World Cup, with four try contributions in four games so far this season.

Impressive Smith

Playing out of his natural position of loose forward, Cameron Smith put on a stellar performance in the halves, pairing with Richie Myler to cover for the injured Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer.

When the team sheet was announced, many eyebrows were raised, but the England Knights international proved why he is so influential to the Rhinos’ side.

The makeshift stand-off backed up his performance with the final try of the first half, to increase the Rhinos’ lead to 24-6 going into the break.

Should we have had more?

I thought Richie Myler and Rhyse Martin could have been in the team too.

Myler, although now mainly used as a fullback, returned to his position of halfback with two assists and a kicking game that was second to none.

The 32-year-old was due to move to Toronto in 2020, but covid stopped that. Since then, he has proved to be a great rotation player, scoring 18 tries in 45 games and winning the Lance Todd Trophy in 2020.

Martin also had a brilliant game and is proving to be one of Leeds’ most consistent players this season.

The second rower bagged 18 points in the match (a try and seven goals), breaking the record for most points scored by a Leeds player in a single match vs Wigan. He surpassed the previous record of Gary Schofield and Kevin Sinfield’s 16 points.
