Former Leeds United defender Aidy White has conceded that the Whites are facing the prospect of every team parking the bus against them if they do not learn how to break down defences in the future.
Leeds suffered their first league defeat of the season when they lost 1-0 at Elland Road to fellow promotion contenders Burnley on Saturday.
Their defeat and other results over the weekend meant Leeds dropped down to ninth in the Championship standings after five league games.
Burnley took an early lead and continued to frustrate Leeds for the rest of the game by defending deep while the home side controlled 72 percent of the possession.
Leeds dominated the ball and made more attempts but struggled to break down a solid Burnley defence that walked away with a clean sheet and all three points.
White admitted that Leeds’ failure to break down the Burnley defence should come as a red herring for the team at this early stage of the season.
No easy fix and Leeds United do not have the players to change the way they attack
The former Whites star conceded that it is not going to be easy to fix the problem upfront as Leeds do not have the forwards to change the way they attack teams.
White insisted that the Leeds attackers depend on sharp movement and passing to break down defences and that didn’t work out against a Burnley rearguard who were happy to sit back and challenged Leeds to breach them.
He stressed that if Leeds do not consistently find that bit of magic to break down defences, more and more teams will decide to sit back against Daniel Farke’s team as it is one of their potential weaknesses.
“It is not an easy fix”, White said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“It is probably the most difficult thing to break down in football when somebody parks the bus.
“We have not really got the players to play long balls and do flick-ons and things like that so we can’t really mix up the play too much.
“We have got players who want to play sharp one-twos in and around the box and it just becomes very congested in there.
“And if we don’t find that key or that little bit of magic and who is going to come up and step up and unlock that defence, it is going to be hard because every team will look at that and think, ‘well we can park the bus every game and they are not going to break us down’.”
Leeds will look to come back from the result on Saturday with a strong performance and a win away at Cardiff City next weekend.
