‘Not reliable’ – Former Liverpool star says Leeds United have made a transfer mistake

Leeds United are moving towards securing the attacking signings Daniel Farke has been demanding over the last few weeks. However, some of the club’s decision-making is coming under scrutiny ahead of their Premier League opener against Everton on Monday night.

Farke decided to move on from Mateo Joseph, who has joined Mallorca on loan, and has made it clear that Patrick Bamford is not part of his plans in the Premier League. It has been apparent for weeks that Leeds need a new striker ahead of the start of the new season, but the club didn’t move until recently.

The Whites have a deal in place to sign former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer this summer. The 28-year-old striker is undergoing a medical ahead of signing a contract with the Whites.

However, Leeds’ decision to sign the forward has split opinion. The fans are unsure about the forward signing a forward whose injury issues are well-documented, and Simon Jordan has already slammed the move.

Can you name these 10 former Leeds United strikers?

Danny Murphy is unsure about Leeds United taking a risk on Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin missed a large chunk of last season due to a hamstring injury and scored just three times in 26 Premier League appearances.

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has conceded that Leeds have taken a huge gamble by signing a striker whose fitness has not been reliable enough in recent seasons.

He understands why Leeds are signing the former Everton striker as they need someone with Premier League experience, but do not have the funds to compete with the bigger clubs for other forwards.

Murphy stressed that a fit Calvert-Lewin could be a huge asset for Leeds, but that remains the biggest question mark around him.

“It’s a big risk for them because his playing record is so poor”, Murphy said on talkSPORT.

“I’d have been tempted to go for somebody a bit more reliable in terms of games.

“Leeds can’t compete with the big boys in terms of what they spend, so they are trying to find some Premier League experience and know-how without breaking the bank.

“If they can get him fit, he’d be a great addition because he is a talent, a strong boy, can score goals, hold the ball up and give them a focal point.

“But if he can’t remain fit, then it’s not going to be as beneficial as it may seem on paper.”
