One goal conceded in five games – Should Karl Darlow be Leeds United number one in the Premier League?

Leeds United were promoted to the Premier League last week after Sheffield United failed to beat Burnley, handing the Whites an automatic promotion place. Now, the club is looking ahead to the summer, where some difficult decisions will be made.

There are still so many questions surrounding this Leeds team. Rumours around Elland Road have suggested Daniel Farke could be in the market for a goalkeeper. And recent news has the Whites being linked to midfielders. Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff the latest name to be linked with a move to Elland Road.

Heading into the Premier League next season, one question remains: Who will be Leeds United’s number one?

With promotion on the line, Daniel Farke made a huge call to drop Illan Meslier after his error in the Swansea game. The Frenchman had been under pressure from fans after some lesser profile mistakes in games. But Farke made his choice after that game, and Karl Darlow has been first choice since.

Darlow has been in goal for six games and Leeds have won five of them, conceding just two goals. This has left some asking that if the club fails to find an upgrade in the summer, could Karl Darlow be the solution?

The numbers tell a different story. According to FotMob, the 34-year old has not really done much in goal. He has faced just 11 shots in six games. Darlow has also conceded just two goals, and statistically, he has prevented just one goal. Add that to Leeds having been dominant in their last few games, scoring 15 goals, and it paints a clearer picture.

Darlow should not be first choice in the Premier League

The Welshman has done a great job as a temporary option, but as to whether he is fit to be first choice over a whole campaign remains a huge question. Leeds would be better off finding a quality shot stopper, as sometimes, that is the difference between relegation and survival.
