Paul Merson sends Leeds United a warning – tells fans what they need to do in the Premier League

Leeds United fans have experienced their best season in recent years. Though they had to wait for a while after they were relegated, they are back in the top flight next season.

The Whites won the Championship in the most dramatic way possible – in injury time on the final day. Manor Solomon scored the winner against Plymouth in the 91st minute to lift the league title.

The fans’ excitement was further buoyed as club chairman Paraag Marathe came to address the team. He vowed to help the club maintain their Premier League status, implying a heavy spending spree in the transfer market.

With Premier League football next season, and an exciting summer for fans to look forward to, the future is bright for the fans. But Paul Merson has warned the Elland Road faithful about the journey in the Premier League.

Merson, speaking on Sky Sports, has warned Leeds to lower their ambitions and not get carried away:

“I think that’s the problem, getting carried away.

“If you’re one of the promoted teams who come up, you want to finish 17th in the league. If you can get 17th in the league, you have pulled up trees at the highest level, for me the manager should get manager of the season.”

The pundit then tells the club to make survival a priority next season, before building upon it the following year. Merson believes it is the best way to establish themselves like a Fulham or Brentford.

“Then you stay in the league and you get some more revenue so you can buy another quality player or two, then you stay another season and buy another two. Before you know it, you’re a Brentford or a Fulham or a Brighton and all of a sudden you’re a solid middle of the table team who can beat the big boys on their day.

”…Come up, get 17th, and build. Everybody starts to sprint before they can walk in the Premier League…”

Is Merson right?

Paul Merson is right, Leeds need stability before they consider any future steps. Aiming for 17th place should be Daniel Farke’s goal next season. If the Whites manage to stay up, then they can plan for the future and make major transfers. Surviving first, then building on the team is a very logical step for newly promoted clubs.

This summer is going to be an important on for Leeds United fans.
