“Poor” – Leeds youngster slammed during Monaco defeat

Former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo has slammed Mateo Joseph for his display against Monaco on Wednesday night.

Leeds United lost 4-2 to the French side, conceding three goals in the second half to cap off a woeful display. Breel Embolo scored a brace with Martins and Ismail Jakobs also netting for the visitors. Robin Koch and Joe Gelhardt scored for the home side.

Assistant coach Rene Maric explained the collapse in the second half:

“I mean, if you look at the first half how we started the game, you could really see that they were on it from the beginning. I think we just missed that in the second half and they didn’t and in the end it’s just a matter of how you move how you react. At such a high level, if you do the split second earlier and did it a little bit faster than the space that they get, they don’t get.”

Leeds youngster Mateo Joseph came on in the second half when the team made several substitutions. Unfortunately for the teenager, he missed a huge chance after being put through on goal by Wilfried Gnonto. Tony Dorigo, who was on LUTV commentary, was not pleased with the youngster:

“Joseph’s got his hands on his head and rightly so because he knows that’s a fantastic chance,”

“First touch was poor. Great play from Gnonto, it really was. Eventually he threads it through and the touch from Joseph is back towards the defender instead of away from him. That would’ve been a real easy chance to put away.”

Joseph has scored 11 goals in six games in the Leeds U21 side in the Premier League 2. The highly rated 19-year old has the potential to become a starter in the team in a few years, but for now, we should not dwell much on a missed chance in a friendly match.
