Patrick Bamford suffered an unimpressive England debut on Sunday as he barely touched the ball before being replaced by Harry Kane near the hour mark.
Just as Southgate was bringing on more creative players in Mason Mount and Jack Grealish, Southgate also substituted Bamford meaning the Leeds man didn’t really get enough of a chance to impress. “Gareth Southgate was pretty ruthless there.” Chris Sutton told BBC Sport.
“I feel a bit for Patrick Bamford.” Sutton finished, and it’s hard to disagree with him. Bamford had no service all game against the deep defence of Andorra, yet Southgate took him off as soon as the creativity got brought on. We hope Bamford’s future England hopes won’t be squandered by the harsh timing of Southgate’s substitution.
