Last week, Leeds United confirmed the departure of Max Wober. The Austrian defender completed a move to Werder Bremen.
Multiple reports initially thought it was a permanent move to the Bundesliga side. But after the deal was officially sealed, the details revealed that it was a loan deal with an option to buy. Some Leeds sources revealed that the change to the transfer came about because the club wanted to hold a stable PSR position.
Joe Donnohue spoke on this:
”…a loan move benefits Leeds United more from a PSR standpoint. Selling Wöber this summer at a price below ~£5m would see the club report a loss on their 2025/26 accounts, due to player amortisation costs.”

Pundit comments on how PSR could affect Leeds United plans

PSR will play a huge part in the club’s transfers this summer. Club chairman Paraag Marathe told the fans that the club ”will spend” every penny to maintain their top flight status. This summer, the Whites are expected to have a transfer budget of around £120million.
Football finance expert Dan Plumley has shared how PSR could affect signing a replacement for Junior Firpo:
“You’ve still got to balance the ins and the outs,” he told MOT Leeds News.
“It’s brilliant to get promoted back to the Premier League and obviously all the financial upside that comes with it.
“But no club at the minute is in the space of being able to just open the chequebook and just spend without concern, because there’s the other side of the equation on outgoings.
“There’s obviously PSR and the financial regulation system still in place, so you have to caveat any incomings with what might happen with outgoings as well.”
Gudmundsson could replace Firpo soon
On Monday, multiple reports indicated that Lille left back Gabriel Gudmundsson would arrive in England to finalize details over a move. The deal has not been completed yet, but a final round of talks are expected later in the day. Leeds will reportedly pay around £9million to sign the 26-year old.
Who could Leeds sell to boost their PSR status?
There are some players that Leeds can sell for a profit, but the main ones right now are: Pascal Struijk, Mateo Joseph and Wilfried Gnonto. Struijk and Joseph arrived years ago for minimal fees as youth prospects, and are now worth more than five times their old value. Selling either of them is a guaranteed profit on the books.
Wilfried Gnonto was signed for less than £4million but after two seasons, his value has skyrocketed and any deal in the future would be at least twice of that transfer fee.
