Former Leeds United star Paul Robinson believes the lack of attacking options in the squad is set to work in favour of Mateo Joseph in the ongoing season.
Joseph has started all six of Leeds United’s Championship games this season but has only scored once so far and just has two senior goals to his name at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke has placed his trust in the forward after Leeds failed to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.
The Leeds manager has been unwilling to trust Joel Piroe in the number 9 role and Patrick Bamford’s injury issues have made him an unreliable option with the German keen on consistency of selection up front.
Joseph is still not proven at this level but Leeds have gambled on the Spaniard coming good this season and making the step up.
Robinson believes Joseph can take advantage of the lack of options in the Leeds United squad
The former Leeds goalkeeper conceded that asking Joseph to make that step up and consistently score goals is a bit too much given his inexperience.
However, he is keen to see the forward get a run of games to prove himself upfront and is confident that he can definitely improve over the course of the campaign.
Robinson also pointed out that Farke’s hands are anyway tied given the lack of options, which could work in favour of the Leeds striker this season.
“It’s a big ask for Mateo Joseph but, on the flip side, he deserves a run of games”, he told MOT Leeds News.
“He’s a player who can improve, someone who I really like, and I think he will get goals.
“It’s difficult as a striker because if you go two or three games without a goal, the likelihood is you get replaced. Farke hasn’t got that many options but it could work in Mateo Joseph’s favour.”
