Don Goodman has claimed that Wilfried Gnonto signed a new contract at Leeds United because he is convinced that the Whites will be a Premier League team next season.
Leeds missed out on promotion last season at the last final hurdle as they lost the playoff final against Southampton at Wembley.
Many feel the Whites were desperately unlucky to miss out on automatic promotion last term as in any other campaign 90 points would have got them to the Premier League.
Leeds also had to cope with the reality of losing Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter but they managed to hold on to Gnonto.
Everton had a bid rejected for the Italian by Leeds and the winger eventually signed a new four-year deal towards the closing stages of the transfer window.
Pundit believes Wilfried Gnonto expects Leeds United to be in the Premier League next year
The Italian winger recently admitted that signing the new contract at Leeds felt like a fresh start for him following last year’s upheavals.
The new deal is a shot in the arm for the Leeds hierarchy and Gooman feels it shows that the player has faith in the club moving forward.
He is insistent that signing the new contract showed that Gnonto is convinced that Leeds will return to the Premier League at the end of the season.
“He wants to play at the highest level possible, which is the Premier League”, Don Goodman said on MOT Leeds News.
“The fact he’s signed a new contract makes me believe, that he believes, Leeds will be a Premier League team this time next season.”
Summerville and Rutter’s departure affected the winger as the duo were two of his closest friends in the Leeds squad.
However, their exits have paved the way for Gnonto to emerge as an important player and he has started all six of Leeds’ Championship games this season.
