With just weeks till the Premier League season kicks off, it looks like Leeds United are getting in shape. The club have continued their good form in pre-season.

Leeds held Manchester United in their first game and have won their last two games against German opposition behind closed doors. Daniel Farke says he is happy with the preparations, but has urged the club to finish the transfer window on a high.

According to reports, Leeds are looking for a winger and a new center forward before the season kicks off. The club were dealt a huge blow as they lost out to Marseille in the race for Feyenoord winger Igor Paixao.

There could yet be some surprise transfers at the club in the latter weeks of the window.

Talksport pundits Alan Brazil and Dean Saunders discussed Kalvin Phillips returning to Leeds United. According to them, it would be a good move for the midfielder at this point in his career.

Brazil said: “We’re talking about an England international here, aren’t we?”

“For me… Leeds need someone they can trust in the Premiership, they need someone with experience, and he’s got that, so as long as it’s not crazy money, I think he’d be happier there.

Saunders replied: “I agree, yeah. He struggled at West Ham as well, didn’t he… but he is a disciplined defensive midfield player and everybody seems to need one at the moment.”

What is the latest regarding the midfielder?

Phillips is still undergoing recovery from his Achilles injury surgery he had months ago. The midfielder is expected to return to the pitch in August. Manchester City players have already arrived and reported to training this week. It is believed that Phillips will not be in the club’s plans this season.

Graeme Bailey revealed that he still thinks the 29-year old will end up at Elland Road this summer:

“I’m increasing in belief that Leeds are waiting for Phillips, as well. I’m even hearing Man City might pay him off,” Bailey said.

“It might cost City a lot [three years left on his contract], but I think he will end up at Elland Road.”

Phillips would be a ‘luxury’ signing

There are many ways in which the former Leeds man could end up back at Elland Road. But you would think Manchester City terminating his contract would be a last resort. A loan makes the most obvious sense in this situation.

If Leeds do get Phillips, he would be a ‘luxury’ player – one the club does not urgently need, but will be willing to keep around. His quality has never been the same since his injuries, and he is barely available. This move would be a huge gamble for the club.

Sorry but for me his days at Leeds are gone. We actually don’t need him and he would be a bench warmer at best. His wages too high and his fitness a constant doubt. If Leeds go for Phillips then they are totally bonkers
