Leeds United have hit a few roadblocks on their path to automatic promotion to the Premier League. A run of two wins in their last five games won’t inspire confidence but Leeds will look to hit the ground running with a home win over Swansea City at the start of a perceived easier run-in. And the Whites must be pleased with the referee who has been appointed for the fixture this weekend.
Daniel Farke has decided against criticising the officials much and will look to get his players to focus back on the automatic promotion race once they return from the international break.
However, Leeds United supporters have been vocal about some of the perceived injustices of the referees against their side, especially in some of the recent games.
The Whites would want their football to do the talking at Elland Road when Swansea visit on Saturday but they would be happy to see the referee who has been handed the charge of the game this week.
He is not trigger-happy with cards and has already been in charge of a pulsating game involving Leeds United this season
Blackburn-born Ben Toner has taken charge of the game involving Leeds and Swansea at Elland Road this weekend and it will be only his second game involving the Whites.
The first Leeds fixture he was appointed to was the pulsating 3-1 win over Middlesbrough at Elland Road in December. It was a high-quality game that saw some brilliant football from both sides.
Toner allowed the game to flow and produced only one yellow card throughout a fixture where both sides didn’t shy away from making some tough challenges.
He has taken charge of 32 games in all competitions, handing out 145 yellow cards and five red cards, which shows his restraint as a referee when it comes to producing cards.
On Saturday, he will be assisted by Richard Woodward and Graham Kane, while James Linington will be the fourth official.
Leeds will enjoy playing their football
Toner is known for allowing the game to flow and that bodes well for Leeds who will look to be at their attacking best against Swansea at Elland Road.
He also has a low propensity for reaching his pockets for yellow or red cards. It would allow the Leeds players to commit a few fouls to break down counter-attacks without fearing that they would attract a yellow card early in the game.
Can you name these 10 former Leeds United players?
Leeds have been on the wrong end of some decisions and they would not want to discuss the performance of the referee at the end of the Swansea fixture.
Toner’s appointment is good news for Leeds who would want to impose themselves on Swansea and show they mean business this weekend.
