Retired goalkeeper looks back on unforgettable Leeds United debut vs Manchester United

Leeds United debut

After announcing his retirement, Leeds United academy product Scott Carson went on to talk about his debut for the Whites.

“After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves. Football has given me everything — memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my ride. It’s been an honour”, Carson posted on Instagram.

Reactions flooded as former White Kalvin Phillips, who played alongside the goalkeeper at Manchester City, commented, “Legend Scotty mate, it’s been a pleasure.”

Another former Leeds player, Adam Forshaw, congratulated the goalkeeper on his retirement after the post, “Congrats mate, what a career.”

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland also paid his respects, claiming that he’ll miss his teammate at the Etihad, “Miss you, pal, all the best.”

Talking to former English goalkeeper Ben Foster on his podcast, Carson revealed his memories regarding the latter’s debut for Leeds United.

Following the suspension of then Leeds first-choice goalkeeper Paul Robinson, 18-year-old Carson was put between the posts at Old Trafford.

When I made my debut for Leeds at Old Trafford, Paul Robinson got sent off a couple of weeks before. I don’t know what it was, but it didn’t kick in for a couple of weeks.”

Obviously, I knew I was playing all along, and that night in the hotel before the game, it’s just horrible. You don’t sleep, you’re waking up thinking, you’re dreaming about the game.”

I’d never been to Old Trafford before, pulled up on the coach and saw that, and I’m like I just can’t wait to be back on this bus, and hopefully it didn’t go too bad.”

Carson doesn’t hold fond memories of Old Trafford

The retired goalkeeper told Foster that he didn’t have fond memories of the debut. Having only been 18 at the time, it was a big job to protect the post.

To be honest, it’s a blur. I’ve never watched it back, and I think in general I didn’t do too badly. I think the goal was, I think Gary Neville’s like half pulled a cross back, I’ve pushed it out, and it’s got tapped in.”

But I think in general I didn’t do too badly because, considering I was 18, I don’t think I would have even started a friendly or anything for the first team. So it was literally just thrown in right at the deep end.”
