Revealed: Leeds United ace shares reason for Elland Road move

Pascal Struijk has significantly impacted Leeds United this 204-25 season. He’s rekindled his strong partnership with summer signing Joe Rodon, and together, they’ve established themselves as two of the best center-backs in the Championship.

Last season was similar, with the pair being a formidable defensive duo until Struijk was sidelined by injury. Looking ahead, one of Leeds’ primary goals for this campaign is to secure promotion to the Premier League after narrowly missing out last year.

To keep their title hopes alive and possibly break into the top two, players like Willy Gnonto and Struijk need to maintain their performance levels and set the standard for the team.

There’s still a lot of season left, and if things keep going as they are, it looks like Daniel Farke’s squad will have little to worry about regarding promotion by the end of the campaign.

Nonetheless, while the defender is experiencing another stellar season, Struijk recently opened up on a personal level with BBC Sport over his decision to come to England and join Leeds United.

Struijk decided to join Leeds United in 2018 because he believed he would “grow” more by moving away from the Netherlands. Since arriving as a teenager, the defender has established himself as a key player in Daniel Farke’s starting XI.

“I had to make a choice about what I wanted to do,” Struijk said. “I could have stayed in Holland if I wanted to but I thought for me as a person, I would grow from making the step outside of the Netherlands.

“I think it was a good choice for me because eventually I grew up a lot as a person and basically from a boy to a man at the moment.”

Could Pascal Struijk leave Leeds United in January?

The Dutchman’s growth at Elland Road hasn’t gone unnoticed as he’s been on the radar of several clubs across Europe. Recently, Football League World have discussed just how safe Leeds United are from transfer moves in January, with Struijk probably being a top flight’s potential target.

“While most would still have a lingering fear that Willy Gnonto might leave, even though he signed a new deal not long ago, for me, the one to worry about in any sense is Pascal Struijk,” Leeds United pundit Kris Smith said.

“He’s the one vital player that I don’t think this Leeds team can afford to lose. It is built around how good he is at both sides of the game. He’s a centre-half who is not only very good in terms of his defensive ability — obviously, forgetting about what happened during the Watford game — but also, he has brilliance with the ball at his feet.
