Revealed: Leeds United ‘were ready’ to make Jose Mourinho their highest paid manager ever – expert insight

Leeds United had a magnificent season under Daniel Farke. The Whites won the Championship with a 100 points after scoring 95 goals during the campaign.

His hiring by the 49ers in 2023 came with a clear message: Leeds wanted promotion. The German almost brought the Whites back up to the Premier League in the space of a season, but Southampton denied them in the play off final. This season was much different. Despite losing three of their best players in the summer, the club were firmly in the race for promotion halfway through the season.

After lifting the league title, rumours came out about Daniel Farke being sacked this summer.

QUIZ: Can you name the team Leeds United sold these players to?

The reports claimed that the 49ers were not convinced that the German was the man for the job in the Premier League. Many big names were linked with the job at Elland Road. One of the shocking names was Jose Mourinho, who is currently in charge of Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Richard Keys made a bold claim that Paraag Marathe reached out to the former Premier League winner for the job. And now, finance expert Dan Plumley has revealed the package the Whites would have needed to entice big managerial names like Mourinho:

“If you’re talking ambitious plans and in the future, who knows? If you’re talking managers of that calibre, it’s probably going to be more than you’ve paid for managers in the past, given where Leeds have been.

“We take it with a pinch of salt as always, but those kinds of managers come with a cost, for sure.” he told MOT Leeds News.

Would Jose Mourinho move have been feasible?

It would have taken a huge proposal to even get Mourinho to return to England. Coming off of a European trophy a few seasons ago, a newly promoted team would not be a sensible move.

Daniel Farke was always going to be the man to lead the club to the Premier League. The fans and the players deserve that next season.
