Sam Byram reveals motivation behind flying start to the season

Sam Byram revealed on the official Leeds United podcast that a fan heckled him during pre season.

The fullback was given a chance by Daniel Farke during Leeds United’s training camp in pre season after he worked with the German coach during his time at Norwich City. Byram was a Leeds United academy graduate and a great servant for the club before leaving in 2016.

It was reported that the 30 year old was not even considered in Leeds’ first team plans for the season before Farke made an important intervention:

“By the time the start of the Championship season drew near, Farke was recommending to Leeds’ board that they table a contract offer. A fit Byram, in Farke’s estimation, would be as good as any left-back in the Championship. A small sample of evidence is yet to contradict him.” Phil Hay wrote in his Athletic column.

Byram has had a flying start to the season, featuring in all but one of Leeds league games this season, Daniel Farke says the fullback is one of the most important players at the club.

The 30-year old narrated the incident that happened during pre season:

“When we played Hearts away, I was warming up behind the goal. One of the Leeds fans kept shouting, ‘Byram, you’re only here because nobody else wants you’. I kept thinking, pretend you can’t hear them’.

“I didn’t expect every fan to understand it, but most people have been positive and glad that I’m back,”

That Leeds fan must be eating his words, as Byram’s incredible start to the season has seen him nominated for Leeds player of the month for September.
