Analysing Scott Parker’s bold Burnley Premier League claim over Leeds United

Leeds United and Burnley had one of the more exciting title races in English football over the last year. It had a lot of ups and downs before the final day of the season.

Two teams were neck and neck from the start of the year, the Clarets and Whites were in unstoppable form. Both sides had incredible home records where they won most of their points.

It took Leeds a last minute goal on the final day of the campaign to lift the league title. Both sides finished on 100 points, but Daniel Farke’s side had a superior goal difference.

Leeds and Burnley were promoted this season, and both clubs will be in the Premier League. Clarets boss Scott Parker spoke on his team’s strong defence, and how it gives them an advantage over other teams heading into next season:

“The basis will be the culture and the environment that we’ve created in a real short period of time. That will be the bedrock of what will drive next year as well and that will be it.

“We realise it will be a challenge, of course it’s a challenge and it’s been proven probably over the last two seasons. But we’ve got something here, which is a togetherness, a core group of men that stick together.”

This comes after Burnley defender Maxime Esteve praised Leeds for their part in the title race this season.

Leeds’ defence is on par with Burnley’s

Burnley had a solid defence in the Championship this season, but so did Leeds United. Goals conceded show that the Clarets conceded 14 less goals than the Whites. But the disparity is mostly down to the performances of James Trafford and Illan Meslier. Leeds’ stopper conceded a number of goals due to errors.

Parker’s side had more structure as they sat in a deep block most of the time, but Daniel Farke focused more on pressing. Outside that, both teams had very similar defensive statistics this campaign.

It is a very sound argument that defence could help Leeds in the Premier League next season.
