‘Someone at the club said to me…’ – Graham Smyth makes massive Leeds United transfer revelation

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke, Graham Smyth in a circular insert.

Leeds United have seen themselves linked with many notable names over the past few days.

With a deal for Facundo Buonanotte being completed, the 49ers appear to be willing to put their hands in their pockets once again to get more deals over the line.

As well as the string of new names that have been linked with a move to Elland Road, there also appears to be the potential for some notable departures, with Joel Piroe among those having an uncertain future at Leeds.

However, Graham Smyth’s recent revelation regarding potential transfers for Leeds in January is certainly set to get supporters excited.

Graham Smyth reveals the one position Leeds want to strengthen in January

Naturally, if Piroe were to leave United in January, one would assume that the Whites would be looking to bring another striker through the door before the transfer window slams shut.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Inside Elland Road Podcast, Smyth revealed what he’s heard from his sources regarding any more potential deals.

“Someone at the club said to me that they’re now very much in the realm of seeing what the market offers them in terms of opportunities compared with their needs…

“I still think there is a desire to do one more, at least if they can, and centre forward is definitely the position they would do it in.”

With this revelation coming off the back of the news that Leeds enquired about Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves, the Whites could seemingly be closing in on a deal that absolutely nobody would have predicted when the transfer window opened.

Data suggests Jorgen Strand Larsen would be a massive upgrade on Lukas Nmecha

Although Nmecha has comfortably outperformed Strand Larsen so far this season, scoring four Premier League goals compared to Strand Larsen’s one, the data over multiple previous seasons suggests Strand Larsen is a far more clinical striker, who is also less injury-prone.

Season Strand Larsen – Apps Strand Larsen – Goals Lukas Nmecha – Apps Lukas Nmecha – Goals
2021/22 32 14 25 8
2022/23 36 5 16 4
2023/24 37 13 3 1
2024/25 35 14 19 3

With Leeds now playing two up front at times this season, Daniel Farke needs another striker to start alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who can handle the physicality of the Premier League, unlike Piroe, whilst being available more often than Nmecha and Strand Larsen fits the bill.

If Leeds could secure a striker of his quality in January, then surely any potential talk remaining regarding Leeds and relegation would come to a screeching halt.

Losing a few players through injury would cost us dearly. The team today did not look as comfrotable but showed spirit to get a win. We need at least 2 more through the door now and if we win enough games before the final run in we really need to start preparing to recruit for next season not leave it until last minute.
