Spain is where I grew up – Mateo Joseph makes telling comment about his Leeds future

Leeds United star Mateo Joseph has indicated that he could decide to return to Spain in the near future despite making a name for himself at Elland Road.

Joseph joined Leeds from Espanyol in January 2022 and broke into the senior set-up under Daniel Farke last season when he was a bit part player in the first-team squad.

However, Farke has placed his trust in the 20-year-old, who was brought to Elland Road by former sporting director Victor Orta, to lead the line for the Yorkshire giants this term.

The Spaniard scored in Leeds’ 2-0 win over Hull City just ahead of the international break and is currently involved with the Spain Under-21s.

Joseph is looking forward to establishing himself at Leeds but the forward has not ruled out a return to Spain in the future.

Mateo Joseph comments on potential return to Spain

A product of the Espanyol academy, the striker moved on from the Catalan club and joined Leeds in 2022 after he was unimpressed by the contract offered by his former team.

He is gradually establishing himself in the Leeds team but the forward admitted that Spain still remains his homeland.

Joseph indicated that he could agree to return to Spain in the near future if everything goes according to plan in his career in England.

“Spain is where I grew up”, the forward told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“And who knows whether I’ll be able to return in the future.”

A rare Victor Orta project signing is coming good

Orta remains a much-derided figure at Leeds for some of his poor signings despite the club getting promoted back to the Premier League under his tenure.

Joseph was an Orta signing and his performances this season are proving the former Leeds sporting director right for chasing his signature in 2022.

He is currently the sporting director at Sevilla and is likely keeping tabs on Joseph’s progress at Elland Road.
