Leeds United are poised for promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. Daniel Farke has admitted that 20 more points from their remaining 13 league games should be enough to get the job done. The promotion talk has led to speculation over what Leeds would need to do in the summer to build a squad to survive in the top flight next season. The Whites are almost certain to bring in a forward or two in the next window and they are considering several names at the moment. One of the strikers Leeds are tracking has been tipped to move on from his current club in the summer transfer window.
The Whites sit at the summit of the Championship table and are preparing to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday night in a top-of-the-table clash.
Leeds are yet to secure promotion but there is a palpable expectation that the Whites are well on their way to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Their recruitment team are already working under the assumption that they will be in the top flight next season and have gone to work to build a squad good enough to survive in the Premier League.
Leeds are aware that they will need reinforcements in every area of their squad but goals are like gold dust for promoted teams and the club are working on identifying strikers who could do a job for them.
Norwich City striker Josh Sargent is one of the forwards the club are tracking and he has been tipped to leave Carrow Road if the Canaries do not get promoted this season.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke wants him – Former White
Norwich are 12th in the Championship table but they are still hanging on to the race for the playoff spots as only four points separate them from the teams in the top six.
However, it seems increasingly likely they will fall short and Carlton Palmer conceded that it would be hard to hold on to Sargent if the Canaries do not get promoted.
He claimed that Farke wanted to sign the forward last summer and remains keen to take him to Elland Road because he is a big admirer.
The former White believes Leeds should not find it hard to agree on a fee with Norwich to sign Sargent next summer if the Canaries are still in the Championship and the Whites get promoted to the Premier League.
“It appears that there is fresh interest from Leeds United in Norwich striker Josh Sargent. Daniel Farke was very keen to bring Josh to the football club previously; last summer he tried to get him, but he wasn’t able”, Palmer told the Football League World.
“He’s scored nine goals and made five assists in 19 appearances – he’s somebody that the manager Daniel Farke is very keen on.
“If Norwich don’t get promotion – and it’s highly unlikely, they’d have to get a race on now to get into the playoffs – it would seem that Leeds can agree on a fee with Norwich.
“I think he’ll be one of those players that Daniel Farke would like to bring to the football club.
“But the opportunity to play in the Premier League would be too good an opportunity for him to turn down.”
Leeds should try to sign him for a knocked-down fee
The Leeds recruitment team would have their jobs cut out next summer if they get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.
Some expensive mistakes in the transfer market played a big role in Leeds getting relegated in 2023 and they cannot afford those same errors this time around.
Leeds need more forward options in the Premier League and Sargent is a player Farke knows and has admiration for since his days as Norwich manager.
Can you name the missing sponsor from these 10 Leeds United shirts?
His record in the Premier League was poor but Farke would bet on him improving as a striker since then and back himself to get more out of him if he joined Leeds.
Leeds cannot afford to blow money on players who are not good enough and a move for Sargent would depend on the kind of money Norwich would demand.
If the Canaries are ready to sell him for a reasonably low fee, Leeds would be prepared to back Fark’s choice and try to take him to Elland Road in the summer.
