This season, there have been plenty of goals. Most teams have been looking to attack and we’ve been blessed with one of the most exciting seasons ever.
But for every goal there’s a huge opportunity missed. So, today we’re counting down the 10 teams to miss the most ‘big chances’ this season.
Along with West Ham, Fulham have missed 25 big chances. This surprised me given the common narrative that the London club have struggled to adapt to life back in the Prem. Perhaps the real route of their relegation battle is an inability to score the big chances that come there way. If they’d have scored at least some of those maybe survival would be more likely.
The Foxes have impressed again this season under Brendan Rodgers. They continue to play attacking football and get the best out of Jamie Vardy. They’re well and truly in the mix at the top of the table. That said, things could be even better if they were more clinical in front of goal having missed 25 big chances with Jamie Vardy surprisingly the main culprit.
Once again, Graham Potter has committed to playing attractive football whilst bidding for survival and so far it seems to be working. That said, it has often been suggested that the Seagulls haven’t always got the result a performance has deserved and perhaps their 25 missed big chances are the reason for that.
The poor form of Timo Werner in front of goal has been well documented. The attacker hasn’t settled int0 life in the Prem and has only scored 4 goals and missed 10 big chances. However, he isn’t the only culprit at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have missed a total of 27 big chances this season.
At the other end of the spectrum to Werner, Son and Kane have been outstanding this season. The pair have scored 24 goals between them this campaign as Spurs have become a counter-attacking machine and the two have become one of the Premier League’s finest attacking duos. However, Spurs have still squandered 29 big chances and their recent plight perhaps owes to that.
5. Leeds United
Leeds’ Patrick Bamford is the Premier League player who has missed the most big chances this campaign. The Mighty Whites have been very attacking in their return to the big time and are seen as one of the most exciting teams to watch. Therefore, their 32 big chances missed isn’t much of a surprise given the volume of attacks they undertake per game.
4. Aston Villa
Like Leeds, Villa have been one of the most exciting teams to watch this season even scoring 7 passed Champions Liverpool. They’re not afraid to attack and could arguably have scored more goals this season having missed a total of 32 big chances with Ollie Watkins the main perpetrator.
The reigning Premier League Champions have struggled for goals in recent games. In fact, they’ve failed to score at Anfield since December 27th at the time of writing. Their usually reliable front three have been hit and miss this season with Firmino and Mane both in the top 10 for big chances missed. And the squad between them have failed to notch a total of 33 big chances this season and they might be chances the Reds rue as their title defence continues to struggle.
2. Manchester United
For the first time in a while, United find themselves in a title race and that is down to their impressive attacking prowess. The Red Devils have excelled at scoring goals away from home and even notched a record-equalling 9 in victory against Southampton at Old Trafford. But with 35 big chances missed United could have more goals and a greater chance of being crowned Premier League champions.
1. Manchester City
Earlier this season, questions were asked about City’s inability to score with many pointing to Aguero’s injury. However, in recent weeks they’ve rediscovered their scoring touch and that has propelled them to the top of the league. Their domination of possession and Pep’s attacking philosophy unsurprisingly leads to plenty of chances and the Sky Blues have missed a whopping 41 big chances this season but if they win the league it won’t matter.
