The major signing Leeds United could make in January

Leeds United could be set to add a major addition to the team that will swing the title race into their favour.

The Whites returned from the international break in style and went top of the table after a hard fought win away to Swansea. Before Sunday’s win, only one team had beaten the Swans at their home. It took a late winner from Wilfried Gnonto to seal a crucial win. Manor Solomon, who was handed a rare start by Daniel Farke, proved his worth as he scored a brace in the game. Farke almost made a key substitution in the second half when he brought on Gnonto, who eventually won the game.

Despite battling injuries and absences, Leeds now sit top of the Championship. Daniel Farke has been looking to the January transfer window as he seeks to boost his squad for another promotion push. Leeds only missed out on making the Premier League when they lost the Championship playoff final to Southampton in May. A few players have already been linked with a move to Elland Road.

Junior Firpo’s contract situation continues to make the news at Elland Road. The 28-year old has made it clear that he is open to leaving the club when his contract expires next year. From January 1st, the left back is open to negotiate with other clubs. Leeds will be losing a player they signed for €15million for free, unless something drastic changes in the next few months.

Isaac Schmidt has also been underwhelming since he arrived at the club, the defender has not been trusted at left back by Daniel Farke. Leeds have lined up FC Nordsjaelland defender Daniel Svensson as a possible replacement for Junior Firpo. The 22-year old is solid and consistent, and has been one of the best left backs in the Danish Superliga over the past few seasons. Svensson finished second in assists in the league last season, and has been one of the most prolific crossers of the ball over the last year.

The left back has all the attacking qualities of Junior Firpo, but is also a great defensive player. Svensson ranks third in interceptions in the Danish superliga this season. He is highly rated, and has been linked to Manchester United and Liverpool over the last year. Leeds signing Svensson would be a huge coup for the club; at his age and his level of talent he would immediately be the first team starter.
