Daniel Farke could add some firepower to the Leeds United attack in the January transfer window.
Leeds are flying high and the confidence is through the roof at Elland Road. The club returned from the international break and secured a huge victory with promotion aspirations. Leeds beat Swansea City 4-3 away from home to go top of the Championship.
The whites now have 32 points and are level with Sunderland and Sheffield United. This season has gone surprisingly well for Daniel Farke’s mean. After losing the Championship playoff final in May to Southampton, the aftermath did not inspire hope in fans at Elland Road.
There was a mass exodus of players, as Leeds could not stop Premier League clubs from snapping up their talent. Former Leeds midfielder Glen Kamara also mentioned how difficult it was to come back from the playoff failure, and said it was part of the reasons he left in the summer.
Leeds United could add a striker in January
Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter all joined Premier League clubs during the summer transfer window. Daniel Farke lost two key pieces in an attack that scored 81 goals last season.
Leeds United went into this campaign with Joel Piroe as the main striker, with Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhardt and Mateo Joseph as his deputies. In some games this season, Piroe has struggled to make his presence felt up top. When Leeds have met sides who sit back and absorb pressure, Piroe has gone missing. It doesn’t help that Brenden Aaronson is the main starter in attacking midfield. The American has been decent this season, but he hasn’t been able to replace the creativity and playmaking Rutter provided last year. Leeds’ attack is crying out for another attacking option, and luckily one is employed by the club.
Sam Greenwood has four goals in his last six league games for Preston North End. The 22-year old is on loan from Leeds United after he wasn’t in Daniel Farke’s plans this season. But the way he has been playing, a recall could be on the cards. Greenwood provides a more dynamic option to Joel Piroe up top, and could even form a strike partnership with the Dutchman.
Should Leeds recall Sam Greenwood?
The attacker is playing at a decent level for Preston so far; he ranks in the 90th percentile for chances created and 95th percentile for fouls won among forwards in the league according to Fotmob. He could just be the catalyst the attack needs.
