This season, the Premier League has been set alight by some outstanding performances. We’ve seen in form strikers, silky midfielders, solid defenders and superb goalkeepers.
So, today we’re ranking the Premier League’s top 20 players this season.
20. Emiliano Martinez
After winning the FA Cup with Arsenal last year, Martinez has been focal to a stellar Villa season. The keeper has kept a whopping 10 clean sheets averaging one every other game. He’s made Villa solid at the back making them a much more complete side headed for a top half finish.
19. Callum Wilson
Where would Newcastle be without their front man? Probably at the foot of the table. His 10 goals make up nearly half of the Magpies total goals this season. He’s also their top assister with 4.
18. Diogo Jota
It may seem controversial to place Jota in this list but before his injury he was one of the league’s most lethal frontmen. The Champions have missed his golden touch in the last few months. His value to the Reds was proven in his winners against Sheffield and West Ham – just 2 of 5 goals he’s scored this campaign.
17. Harvey Barnes
Despite scoring 6 goals so far this season, Barnes’ year has gone under the radar. He continues to progress under Rodgers and has been a focal part of their impressive attack. He’s a creative spark too producing 3 assists and without him, Leicester arguably wouldn’t be quite so high up in the table.
16. Michail Antonio
Despite spending a fair chunk of the season on the treatment table, Antonio has had a sublime season. He’s notched five goals and West Ham – who are having a fantastic campaign – look even better when he’s in the side. Everything revolves around the attacker who subdued City earlier this season. Should he remain fit, West Ham could well be headed for the top 8.
15. Danny Ings
Injuries have once again robbed Ings of his finest form this season. But despite those injury lay-offs, the ex-Liverpool striker still has 7 goals. That on the back of a stellar season last time out proves his quality as one of the league’s finest strikers. It’s not all about goals for Ings either. He’s also chipped in with 3 assists this campaign.
14. Kalvin Phillips
The Leeds United midfielder has instantly shown he’s Premier League quality. Leeds’ most important player, the Yorkshire side struggle and leak far more goals when he’s not at the hub of their midfield. He dictated the game in victory against Everton earlier this season thanks to his defensive strengths and quality passing. The midfielder has everything a modern CDM requires.
13. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
The Danish midfielder has been an understated signing. He’s provided Spurs much needed balance and a fulcrum to build around. Much has been made of their attack, but as the midfield general and defensive screen, Tottenham’s success owes a lot to Hojbjerg.
12. Ruben Dias
Arguably the league’s most important signing. The centre-back has solved City’s defensive issues guiding the Sky Blues to 11 clean sheets this season. Remarkably, the table-toppers boast the league’s best defence despite how much they struggled last term. If City go onto win the league, he’ll be at the heart of it.
11. James Rodriguez
The Everton midfielder has been one of the signings of the season. The Colombian has found the form that made him such a sought-after commodity after the 2014 World Cup. He’s unlocked Everton’s attacking potential and has certainly gifted Calvert-Lewin the platform to be successful.
10. James Ward-Prowse
For me, the Southampton midfielder isn’t given nearly enough credit. This season he’s shown his quality from dead-ball situations again and scored 4 goals in total. Add to that his 5 assists and his place at the hub of another fantastic season for the Saints, he should be considered one of the league’s best midfielders at the moment.
9. Dominic Calvert-Lewin
The first man to break the 10-goal barrier this season is having a top-notch campaign. He’s truly reached the potential Toffee fans believed he had. No doubt, he’s in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the summer and rightly so. With 11 goals he could well win the golden boot.
8. Jamie Vardy
The Foxes striker is having another stellar season. With 11 goals he’s well in the race for the golden boot and again proving age is but a number. Under Rodgers he has the perfect setup to play to his strengths and he continues to be one of the league’s best strikers.
7. Ilkay Gundogan
With 7 goals this season, Gundogan is surprisingly City’s top scorer. An impressive season from the German has gone under the radar but he has helped resolve City’s need for goals. Arguably, if someone like Pogba was having his season, people would be claiming he was the league’s best centre-mid.
6. Jack Grealish
Villa are having a superb season and at the centre of it is talismanic skipper Jack Grealish. He’s finally hitting the heights so many expected of him and seems a certainty for England at the Euros. He’s scored 6 goals this season and produced 9 assists.
5. Harry Kane
The England skipper is having another impressive season. Mourinho has played to his strengths and in doing so has created a formidable attack. He’s produced a crazy 23 goal involvements including 12 goals – the second most in the league – and 11 assists – the most in the league.
4. Son Heung-Min
Despite the wide range of quality left-wingers in the league, Son has arguably become the competition’s best this season. His 12 goals leaves him in second place in the race for the golden boot. Along with Kane, he’s formed one of the Premier League’s deadliest ever duos. He’s also chipped in with 6 assists.
3. Mo Salah
How some people still doubt Salah’s quality is behind me. The winger leads the way for goals with an impressive 13. A third golden boot in four seasons looks like a real possibility. Without him, Liverpool’s already rocky title defence would likely be much worse.
2. Kevin De Bruyne
With an impressive 10 assists, KDB is again one of the league’s most creative players. No one can pass quite like the Belgian. In terms of raw quality – taking form out of it – he is probably the league’s best player. It’s certainly not his best season but with 13 goal involvements he’s still having an outstanding campaign.
1. Bruno Fernandes
It’s safe to say the Manchester United midfielder has settled into life in the Prem despite only being here for 12 months. The Portuguese centre-mid has had a superb season scoring 11 goals and producing 7 assists. He’s in the hunt for the golden boot and his attacking quality is at the heart of every Manchester United performance. He’s no doubt been the key to their title challenge.
