Leeds United fans will be glad that the 49ers made the huge decision to appoint Daniel Farke back in 2023. After being relegated, the club looked a bit of a mess and needed a way forward.
And even before their first season back in the Championship, players had already started making their way out of the club. The German was put in charge with one goal; promotion. And he almost achieved this the first time of asking.
| Player | Games | Goals | Assists | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crysencio Summerville | 46 | 19 | 9 | 28 |
| Georginio Rutter | 46 | 6 | 15 | 21 |
| Dan James | 44 | 13 | 6 | 20 |
| Joel Piroe | 44 | 13 | 3 | 16 |
In 2023, Leeds had one of their best campaigns in recent history with a deadly attacking trio of Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville.
Georginio Rutter reveals biggest Leeds United regret
The Whites were firmly in the race for automatic promotion that year, but tailed off in the final weeks of the season. They eventually missed out and had to go through the playoffs. Leeds reached the final but suffered a shocking defeat to Southampton that summer. Georginio Rutter, who was a key part of the squad that year, says he still does not understand how his former side failed to win that final:
“Unfortunately, we didn’t go up, and even today, I ask myself, how? When I came to this game, the play-off final, I thought we were going to win, 100% we were going to win, and next year I’m going to play in the Premier League with Leeds… And we didn’t, and I think this was the worst day in my life because I never cried like this in my life… in my head, still, I can’t (believe it), every game I play against Tottenham, I speak with Archie Gray, I say how (did we not go up)?”
That summer had major implications
It was a few years ago, but that defeat to Sunderland set off a lot of events. That summer saw the exodus of many of the team’s key players. Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Glenn Kamara all departed the club.
This left the Whites with not a lot of quality going into the next season, but Daniel Farke still managed to prevail. He retooled the squad with a few transfers and found solutions within the squad. Even without the immense firepower Summerville and Rutter provided, Leeds were able to win promotion with 100 points and scoring 85 goals.
