When Leeds United faced West Ham on Friday night, they knew it would be a very tough game going in. The Hammers were looking for their first win under Nuno Espirito Santo.
And the Whites were hoping to bounce back from their shock defeat to Burnley. Everything looked to be going Leeds’ way; they had more rest and preparation time than the Hammers who played on Monday. Most importantly, they would play in front of Elland Road, where they have gotten their best results this season.
On Friday night, the most unlikely hero emerged for Daniel Farke’s side – Brenden Aaronson. The midfielder scored the opener and was arguably the best player on the pitch on the night.

It came as a bit of a shock for a player that failed to register a goal or an assist since he returned to the starting lineup.

Statistically, the American was the best player on the pitch; Fotmob rated him 8.3 which made him the man of the match.
Aaronson had the most shots (3), highest expected goals (0.57), and successful dribbles (3/3) in the game. He rightfully earned plaudits from Rob Green and Stuart Dallas who were on the panel covering the game.

Rob Green on Aaronson: “You have got to credit the manager as well because he could have been one of the fall guys after last week, he missed the big chance at Burnley.
“There was a lot of frustration from the Leeds fans about him so to stick with him, for the manager to stick to the strength of his convictions, when there was a straight swap there for Dan James, fair play to the manager.”
Dallas on Aaaronson “Brenden does need to improve his end product but he is one of the best players at receiving the ball in tight areas and tonight he showed what he is capable of.”
Aaronson has earned his place in the team
Like it or not, the American fulfils a very unique role for his side. His off the ball contributions help the team a lot; he can press and win tackles and duels. And even though his attacking side of the game is criticized, he is among the most creative players for Leeds United this season.
Daniel Farke was right by bringing him into the team, and his decision has been vindicated by the player.
