Leeds United have enjoyed a brilliant return to the Premier League this term. They look like a Premier League quality outfit more than capable of securing place in the top half.
Their squad is littered with outstanding talents such as Kalvin Phillips or the highly sought-after Raphinha.
However, this being their first season back in the big time, they’re naturally still carrying some of their Championship players. So, here’s three Leeds players yet to prove they’re Premier League quality.
Tyler Roberts
Many Leeds fans want Roberts gone or at least for an upgrade to take his place. He was a solid attacking option in the Championship for Leeds but doesn’t appear to have the tools to pry open Premier League defences. He’s failed to score a goal in the top flight in his 19 appearances this term. In fact, he’s only managed 18 shots and 2 assists this season. For an attacking option in a team looking to secure a place in the top half that’s simply not good enough.
Pablo Hernandez
There’s no doubt in my mind that during his Swansea days Hernandez was Premier League quality. I expected him to still be at those levels this year if not higher given the superb performances he was producing in the Championship. He was Leeds’ most important player in the second tier and I predicted that he would remain as such. However, it’s not been the case. In his old age he’s failed to look like a Premier League quality midfielder and appears along way off his peak only making a handful of appearances. Making matters worse, with a move on the cards it sounds like his time at Elland Road is coming to an end with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang with no chance of proving he’s Premier League quality once again.
Liam Cooper
Liam Cooper has been a superb servant to Leeds and an even better captain. However, he doesn’t strike me as a Premier League centre-back. He lacks the physical attributes and skills to be considered one in my opinion. Going forward I can see him being replaced by Leeds’ new recruits as the Whites begin to evolve their first team. I think he’ll continue to be an important leader and a vital squad player but he just feels a step below Premier League quality to me.
