Three players Leeds United could sell to fund transfers in January

Leeds United made a lot of money off selling their star players during the summer transfer window.

The transfer fees for the trio of Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter was around €100million combined. The players that arrived at Elland Road did not cost a fraction of what Leeds got from selling their stars. Ahead of the January window, Daniel Farke has already admitted that the club will only move to sign players if something significant happens.

“You never know if there is going to be a big injury or something like this. If nothing happens, I expect a really, really quiet January because overdoing some things can also bring a group who is tight together and on a good path, without meaning it, to a situation where they lose their togetherness or spirit.”

With January approaching, let’s take a look at some players Leeds United could offload to make room for other signings.

Max Wober

The Austrian defender has only played two games this season, with the second one coming midweek against Luton Town. Wober has missed a majority of the season due to injury. Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon have done a fantastic job in defence, and any hope that Wober has of replacing one of them is fading fast. Leeds could make a decent amount off selling the defender, and according to Daniel Farke, the team have a ready made player to step into his backup role. Farke is a big fan of academy star James Debayo and could trust him to fill in for the rest of the season.

Joe Gelhardt

The 22-year old wants to leave Elland Road. His value is still decent after that one season on loan with Sunderland. Gelhardt is still highly rated, and many teams around the Championship could do with an attacker of his quality. If he is sold, Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford are enough depth behind Joel Piroe.

Junior Firpo

Firpo’s contract is up next summer, and he will be free to negotiate with other clubs from January. However, he is still under contract with the club. If Leeds are able to get a team willing to agree to a cut-price deal for the 28-year old, they will recoup some of the €15million they spent to sign him years ago.
