Ahead of the January transfer window, Leeds United have some problem areas to solve as they compete for Premier League promotion.
Leeds are firmly in the promotion race sitting in third place just two points behind Sunderland and Sheffield United. Daniel Farke’s men were not heavily favored for the league this year after losing key players in the summer.
Any club would have it difficult to replicate what Leeds United did last season after losing two players named in the EFL team of the year, and the EFL and PFA Championship player of the year.
Losing Archie Gray meant Leeds lost a key component of their midfield. And the departure of Summerville and Rutter saw them lose 40+ goals from last season. Leeds are still in a good place, and could be even better as they head into the January transfer window.
Here are three players Daniel Farke should consider adding to the squad when the window opens:
QUIZ: Can you name the missing player from these 10 famous Leeds United photos?
Kalvin Phillips
The main issue of concern in this Leeds United side at the moment is in midfield. Illia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu are expected to be out until around January and needs will need support for their current midfield of Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell. Phillips is a perfect fit, he understands the club and has shown he can fit into many different roles in the midfield of the park. The problem is Ipswich Town will not be eager to let go of him, as Kieran McKenna has said he is an important player this campaign.
Ryan Kent
Another area of the pitch where Leeds United need help is in attack. Despite being one of the best attacks in the league, there is something still missing whenever Leeds play. Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto have done their fair share, but it is quite obvious why the duo were rotation options last year. Leeds need that spark out wide; a player who can take on a man and can be a real goal threat. Ryan Kent could be the solution, and he is available on a free.
Dennis Cirkin
This move is one more geared towards the future but can still be done In January. Junior Firpo continues to stay mute over his future at the club with his contract running out next year. Dennis Cirkin fits the profile of what Daniel Farke needs from his fullbacks. The Sunderland man is also a goal threat on the overlap; he scored five goals in the championship two seasons ago. A deal would be difficult considering Sunderland are promotion rivals, but the right offer may persuade the club.
