Unfortunate setback could cost Leeds United £10M – big development over last 24 hours

Despite not being a ‘selling club’ Leeds United have had quite a lot of success with sales over the past few years. Under different recruitment teams, the club has still managed to find some gems in the transfer market.

Under Victor Orta, Leeds had a policy of buying young talent with high potential. The recruitment drive saw the likes of Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Pascal Struijk and Crysencio Summerville join the club. They all started with the U21s, with some making it up through the ranks into the first team.

The club sold Summerville for a huge profit last summer, while Struijk has now become the club captain.

In recent seasons, the club has also made money off players they signed under Jesse Marsch. Tyler Adams spent just over a year at Elland Road but was sold for a profit to Bournemouth.

Some of the high profile sales from the club in recent years include Kalvin Phillips, Archie Gray and Raphinha. Phillips and Gray were from the academy and earned the club huge profits. Raphinha on the other hand, was great scouting during Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure.

Leeds signed the Brazilian for just 15million. After two seasons, he joined Barcelona for a huge £55million fee. The deal included some clauses that the Whites have benefited from. However, they will miss out on £10million after the events of last night’s Champions League clash. Barcelona fell to Inter Milan in the semi final, which means the Spanish club cannot win the trophy this season.

Leeds were due a £10million fee if Barcelona had won the Champions League; through a clause in Raphinha’s contract.

£10million fee is a missed opportunity

Leeds earning a cool £10million would have been great this summer. With the club going up to the Premier League, financial rules are tighter, meaning any wasted money could trigger PSR regulations. Daniel Farke will still have up to £150million to spend this summer, according to reports.
