Wayne Rooney comparison was a ‘big burden’ for Leeds United striker – He is getting back to his best

Leeds United have several decisions to make in the next summer transfer window regardless of whether they get promoted to the Premier League. Several players are fighting for their futures at the moment and the Whites will also have to take a call on whether to sell some of their stars who are currently on loan away from the club.

The Yorkshire giants are aware that promotion to the Premier League would lead to an overhaul of their squad in the summer as the current group are unlikely to be good enough in the top flight.

Several players such as Ilia Gruev are fighting for their futures at Elland Road as Daniel Farke and the recruitment team assess their quality ahead of the next transfer window.

Leeds also have to decide on the fate of players who will return to the club from loans and Joe Gelhardt is the most prominent name on that list ahead of the summer.

The ‘Wayne Rooney’ comparison was not good for the Leeds United loanee – Tony Mowbray

Current West Brom boss Tony Mowbray managed Gelhardt at Sunderland when he joined the Black Cats on loan and he has fond memories of the forward.

The Baggies manager insisted that the attacker has a real jest to improve as a footballer and is always willing to listen to his coaches who he wants to please.

He feels the talent has suffered because of the fact that he was compared with England legend Wayne Rooney very early in his career and that was grossly affair as it increased the pressure on him.

“He’s a lovely lad, a lovely kid who loves football, wants to improve, and wants to get better”, Mowbray told Hull Live when asked about the 22-year-old.

“I think it was a big burden on him, wasn’t there? A lot of people thought he was the next Wayne Rooney coming through at Wigan and then going to Leeds.

“But a nice lad, I found that he would listen, was intelligent, wanted to please.”

Gelhardt is getting back to his best at Hull

The forward joined Hull on loan from Leeds in the winter transfer window and has been a constant presence in Ruben Selles’ starting eleven since moving there.

The Hull City boss has used him in several roles and he has looked better with each passing week due to the fact he has been playing regularly with the Tigers.

1.

Hull are interested in signing him on a permanent deal if they survive in the Championship and a deal has been deemed a ‘no-brainer’.

Gelhardt has looked fit and determined in the Hull shirt and unlike Daniel Farke, Selles has shown faith in his talent and put his versatility to good use.

He has been gradually getting back to his best and it will not be a surprise if Hull approach Leeds to get a permanent deal over the line soon.
