Why Andrea Radrizzani sacked Jesse Marsch – he made the right call

The 2022/23 season was one of the weirdest ones in recent Leeds United history. During that year, the Whites cycled through four different coaches in a single Premier League season.

After Marcelo Bielsa was sacked, Leeds were all over the place. But the ownership brough in Jesse Marsch who guided the club to 15 points in their last 12 games to finish 17th in the 2021/22 season. During that summer, the American was heavily backed in the transfer window bringing in former Red Bull products Max Wober, Rasmus Kristensen, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson among other signings.

And then halfway through the new campaign, he was sacked by the ownership. Leeds tried to salvage the season by bringing in Javi Gracia who was also sacked and replaced by Sam Allardyce. But the club could not salvage their season and were relegated.

The former Leeds United owner has been speaking to The Mail about his time at the club. And when he was reflecting on the 2022/23 season, he admits he should have sacked Jesse Marsch earlier. The American coach lasted 17 games, but the Italian admitted he should have sacked Marsch before November:

“In my last year at Leeds, I made many mistakes and I was struggling outside of football too.

“I made wrong decisions. I should have done things sooner,” Radrizzani said in the interview.

“Like changing the coach [Marsch] before the 2022 World Cup, but at that moment it didn’t work out, and it is what it is.

“We don’t go anywhere with ifs and buts, but I still have some regrets of course,” he added.

Why Jesse Marsch was sacked – numbers tell a lot

It was quite simple why the American was let go, he was poor. In those 17 games, he managed just four wins. And after spending close to £100million, any owner would have expected much better results.

Between the end of August and the end of October, Leeds lost six out of 10 games and failed to score in four of those games. Radrizzani has a point – if maybe he was sacked before November, the season could have been salvaged.
