Why the Burnley trip could be the biggest game of the season for Leeds United?

Leeds United are set to embark on a game of massive proportions as they prepare to face Burnley at Turf Moor in a few hours. The game already had massive significance even before the weekend’s events given how tight it is at the top of the Championship table. However, Sheffield United’s 3-0 home defeat against Hull City on Saturday and Sunderland’s 2-2 draw against Plymouth have further increased the importance of the fixture between the league leaders and the third-place side in the Championship standings. Burnley have a chance to break into the top two tonight while arguably, this could be Leeds’ biggest game of the season given how significant three points would be for the away side.

Sheffield United squandered a massive chance to put pressure on Leeds United and move to the summit of the Championship table on Saturday while Sunderland missed an opportunity to put pressure on the three teams above them.

Both Leeds and Burnley now have extra motivation to win all three points tonight and make a real statement in the race to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League this season.

If the Whites are to win tonight they will build a five-point lead at the top of the league table but more importantly, they will have a six-point buffer over Burnley who are sitting just outside the automatic promotion spots.

A win for the Clarets at home will help them to barge into the top two of the Championship standings and go level on points with league leaders Leeds.

For Leeds, a win tonight will be a significant result, which could make this probably their biggest game of the season.

Leeds United must grab the chance tonight

The Whites have been remarkably consistent this season and while some have termed them predictable, Leeds’ style of play has made them such a force at the top of the Championship standings.

However, it is still very tight at the top of the league table and the margin for error has been minimal as all the teams have been playing well with some consistency.

But Sheffield United’s defeat has opened up the table at the top and there is now a real chance for Leeds to build some distance between them and the chasing pack.

The reason the Burnley fixture is turning out to be the biggest game of the season for Leeds is that they now can take a giant stride towards promotion.

A potential six-point lead over teams outside the top two is massive at this stage of the season and more importantly, Leeds could afford a bad performance here and there.

In a Championship season where the margin for error has been small, a six-point lead in the promotion spots would be massive at this stage of the season.

The Whites have a chance to go big if they win tonight

A win tonight will not only put Leeds firmly in the driver’s seat to get automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. But it’s the fixtures later that make this game more important.

Following the trip to Burnley tonight, Leeds have a home game against Cardiff City at Elland Road next weekend before they travel to Coventry City next week.

Leeds have a trip to Watford later in the month before back-to-back games against promotion contenders Sunderland and Sheffield United at the end of February.

A win tonight at Burnley, Leeds have a massive chance to have a significant lead at the top of the Championship table before those two games against Sunderland and Sheffield United.

It would give them the breathing space to drop a few points against Sunderland and Sheffield United without conceding their spot in the top two of the Championship.

Daniel Farke will look to ensure that his Leeds side remain calm tonight but three points at Burnley could go a long way in sealing promotion to the Premier League.
