Won’t put teams off – ex-Leeds star makes bold statement on future value of Wilfried Gnonto

Former Leeds United star Paul Robinson doesn’t believe the lack of a release clause will affect the future of Wilfried Gnonto if he continues to play well in Leeds United colours.

The 20-year-old winger’s future at Leeds this summer was under the scanner but he is one of the key players who stayed at Elland Road beyond the end of the last window.

Gnonto recently signed a new four-year contract with the club and is one of the most important players in the Leeds squad this season as they seek to push for promotion again.

There are suggestions that the winger could eventually move on from Leeds if he realises his potential in the near future.

However, unlike Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, who left Leeds in the summer when their release clauses were triggered, there is no such mechanism in Gnonto’s new contract.

But Robinson is of the opinion that it will be a non-issue if the winger continues to play at a top level for Leeds.

The ex-Leeds star is not worried about the lack of a release clause in the new contract of Wilfried Gnonto

The former Leeds goalkeeper doesn’t feel the lack of a release clause will be an issue if Leeds decide to sell Gnonto in the coming years for a hefty profit.

He insisted that if the winger plays well then clubs won’t shy away from paying top dollar for the Italian, given the kind of money Leeds have made from player sales this summer.

“I’m not so sure the release clause was that important in Gnonto’s contract”, Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“The prices that Leeds got for Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville. He’s maybe not in that bracket, but just below it.

“A release clause wouldn’t have been beneficial because if a team want him, and he’s performing to a level, you can see the level that Leeds are willing to sell at and that won’t put teams off.”
