£10m Leeds United ace earns hero status at Elland Road after sensational footage emerges

Daniel Farke and Leeds United will feel reasonably satisfied to come away from Selhurst Park with a point after their 0–0 draw against Crystal Palace.

Leeds had a huge chance to take the lead in the first half when they were awarded a penalty inside the Palace box, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin sent his effort wide, missing the opportunity to score his 11th Premier League goal of the season.

The challenge became even greater just before half-time when Gabriel Gudmundsson picked up a second yellow card and was sent off. Despite being reduced to ten men, Leeds showed strong resilience in the second half and held firm to secure a valuable point.

Gumundsson’s sending off has dominated headlines, with Wayne Rooney finding the decision strange and Chris Sutton calling it a harsh decision.

However, what the defender did after the game is likely to earn him a hero status at Leeds.

Gabriel Gudmundsson shared a moment with Leeds’ away supporters

The Swede’s sending off on Sunday more or less killed any chance of Leeds leaving Selhurst Park with an away win in their bag. The team did well to hold on to the point.

Farke was livid with the decision and insisted that it was nothing short of a clear mistake from the referee, and Gudmundsson will now miss the Brentford game.

However, footage has emerged that is likely to only secure his hero status among the Leeds fans despite the sending off at Selhurst Park.

Gumundsson came out after the game to apologise to the away fans and greet them in person for the mistake he had committed during the game.

He shook hands with several supporters before he was ushered back into the dressing room.

The Swede has been one of the best signings for Leeds, and what he did in South London on Sunday will likely secure him a cult status.

He has been a revelation this season

Signing a left-back was a priority for Leeds last summer following the free transfer departure of Junior Firpo at the end of last season.

Gumudnsson was snapped up for a fee of around £10m, which is a steal in hindsight, and he has been nothing short of brilliant since his arrival.

Daniel Farke’s decision to shift to a 5-3-2 in the middle of the season could have impacted a player who was brought in as a defensive left-back.

However, Gudmundsson seamlessly adapted and improved his attacking game to remain one of the first names on the team sheet when fit and available.

He has proven to be a good example of how Leeds improved their scouting and recruitment in the last summer transfer window.
