Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a huge talking point in the summer when he arrived at Elland Road. Not many fans were in support of his arrival at the club.
Some fans felt the team could have done better recruiting quality attacking players. Leeds were linked with the likes of Rodrigo Muniz and Callum Wilson, but ended up with none of them at the end of the window. The deal for Calvert-Lewin seemed like a no-brainer when it got close to the end of the transfer window.
The Whites needed a center forward, and the Englishman was one of the viable options remaining. According to the former Everton man, Leeds reached out just days before he eventually put pen to paper on a deal. Calvert-Lewin explained that Daniel Farke was a big part of why he signed; the German was able to convince the striker over the phone about the project at Elland Road.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffers major blow in England game
At the start of the season, the striker struggled with fitness because he did not really have a pre-season. He had to be slowly introduced into the lineup because he was lacking match fitness. And it showed in the way he played as he looked a bit off the pace. But when he got into his groove, he looked unstoppable for Leeds United. He went on a crazy run of form between November and December, scoring seven goals to help his side get crucial points.
Then the calls for England came up, with many wanting him to return to the fold. Thomas Tuchel made it a reality, when he called up the striker for the March international break. His inclusion was part of the German’s plan to find a suitable alternative to Harry Kane at the World Cup. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a shocking miss which could have put England ahead in the 71st minute.

Leeds United star’s World Cup chances are dwindling
Thomas Tuchel mentioned that this game was a chance for the strikers to make a claim to be the backup to Harry Kane at the World Cup, which meant they needed to take their chances. Dominic Solanke was almost anonymous in his time on the pitch, but Calvert-Lewin showed some dynamism. Unfortunately for him, he got on the end of a chance but missed it. It is fine margins, and if the Leeds man does not get any other chances to play in the break, that game could cost him a spot on the plane for the World Cup.
