Leeds United blew a huge chance to get three points against Brentford at Elland Road. In their poor run of form, this game ahead of the international break was a great opportunity.
However, the Whites only managed a goalless draw. This is the fourth game in a row that the team has failed to score a goal in a league game. The form has been even worse; Farke’s side have picked up just two points from a possible 12. Now, Leeds United have eight games left to save their season – the team is just four points above the relegation zone with a tough schedule ahead.
Graham Smyth questions Daniel Farke’s decision vs Brentford
It was really an eyesore watching Leeds try to break down Brentford at Elland Road. Daniel Farke’s men looked clueless with the ball and just resorted to hopeless crosses. Noah Okafor and Dan James brought some pace into the game, but they failed to deliver anything dangerous. Graham Smyth has questioned why Farke chose to leave Wilfried Gnonto on the bench when his team needed attacking quality.
“Honestly, I feel like Daniel Farke could’ve done a bit more. If the plan is to deliver the ball into the box with all your big players up there, you’re the one that’s going for it because Brentford aren’t really going for it… Willy Gnonto’s sat on the bench. Why’s he sat on the bench? We talked about his ability to deliver into the area, his crossing ability and the quality he’s got, I didn’t understand that, I found that really difficult to understand and Leeds didn’t show the necessary quality to create a really good chance and I feel like creativity’s been a bit of an issue of late and not just in that game.”
Wilfried Gnonto has been underutilized this season
In a season where Dan James has barely been fit, and Jack Harrison left in midseason, it is shocking how Gnonto has not gotten more chances to play. Leeds have lacked a threat from wide areas, and with Noah Okafor playing more centrally, the team have also lacked someone with pace. Daniel Farke has seen the impact the Italian can make from the bench and still decides to keep him off the pitch. Against Liverpool at Elland Road, Gnonto was the catalyst in the comeback – and he is capable of more than that, but just never gets the chance to.
