Leeds United have not been on the good side of the Premier League for the last couple of weeks. It has emerged that they have been the end of two major errors from refereeing.

The Premier League Key Match Incidents panel ruled that Leeds should have gotten a penalty against Sunderland as Pascal Struijk was fouled in the box. The Whites went on to lose that game. Another review emerged where the panel ruled that Gabriel Gudmundsson should not have been shown a second yellow card against Crystal Palace – Leeds drew that game. Farke’s side have been on the end of some abysmal refereeing decision for the last few weeks, and this has cost them serious points in games.

To make matters even worse, Leeds United were hit by a fine a week ago. The club was sanctioned after failing to adhere to rules concerning kickoffs and restarts, with a fine in excess of £530,000 being issued. Football finance expert Kiernan Maguire has touched on the situation, saying that the league had every right to punish Leeds.

“This comes under the broader header of sporting integrity. If a football club delays coming out for the second half, if it increases the chance of muscle tear or mentally slows them [opposition] down, then marginal gains do have a benefit.” he said on The Price of Football podcast.

“There are limits to halftime to ensure that one side doesn’t get an advantage. The multiple offences that have led to the charge and the fine, because it involves nine matches, it’s clearly some form of deliberate strategy.”

Leeds now have to be careful not to breach these rules from now till the end of the season, in order not to incur any more fines.

Whites need to decide their own fate

Referees have played a huge part in why the team has dropped points in the last couple of weeks, but Leeds deserve some of the blame too. Daniel Farke’s men cannot seem to ride on the momentum of games to get wins. They had chances to get a result against Manchester City, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, but poor finishing decided the results. The poor refereeing also made the games worse, but if the club were able to decide their own games, sometimes the decisions going against them would not matter.
