‘If Leeds can…’ – Michael Owen delivers honest Leeds United admission amid tense relegation battle

Leeds United were held to a 0–0 draw by Brentford at Elland Road on Saturday, taking a point in their fight to stay in the Premier League.

It wasn’t the win they needed, and it extended their league winless run to six matches. Still, they at least avoided defeat and kept things moving.

There was some help elsewhere. West Ham United lost to Aston Villa, while Nottingham Forest picked up an impressive win over Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Leeds 16th and four points above the relegation zone.

The bigger issue, though, is going forward. Leeds haven’t scored a league goal in over a month, and there’s growing doubt over whether they can secure their Premier League status this season.

Michael Owen gives his honest take on Leeds United

Some pundits are unsure about Leeds staying up following their poor run of form, and Michael Owen conceded that they are not looking as good as they were towards the start of 2026.

However, he feels Leeds have an easier run-in compared to the other teams battling to survive, and a solid defence will stand him in good stead.

He believes if Leeds start scoring goals again, they have more than enough to stay up in the Premier League this season.

“The Premier League is tough”, Owen told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Leeds had a good end to the year and beginning of 2026, picking up plenty of points to push up the table, but now the form has levelled out.

“I believe they can stay up.

“Their run-in isn’t as tough as others around them, and also, having winnable games at Elland Road, they can get back to scoring goals, as their defence is pretty good.”

Scoring goals has been a huge issue

Leeds United have now gone 419 minutes without a Premier League goal, a worrying drought at a time when every point matters in their survival fight.

There’s already been a clear warning: unless they rediscover their cutting edge soon, they risk being dragged into the bottom three as the season reaches its final stretch.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t found the net in the league since early February, while Lukas Nmecha last scored in the 3–3 draw against Chelsea.

Chances have been scarce, and players like Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor will need to step up and offer more creativity and service to the forwards during the run-in.

If things don’t improve quickly, Leeds could come under serious pressure after the international break.

A tough clash with Manchester United is next, followed by key fixtures against Tottenham, Burnley and Wolves, games that could define their season.

None of them will be straightforward, and Leeds will need their attacking players to start delivering if they’re to pick up enough points to stay in the Premier League.
