Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form with Leeds United has been rewarded with an England call-up from Thomas Tuchel, as the German will begin to closely inspect the Leeds forward ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Calvert-Lewin is not the only Leeds player to be recalled to their respective national team after a long spell away, with Anton Stach also being called up to the Germany squad.

Noah Okafor is yet another example of this, with the winger being involved in the Switzerland squad for their upcoming games, with all these call-ups being a testament to the good work that Daniel Farke is doing in West Yorkshire.

Ahead of England’s upcoming games against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay and then Japan, Calvert-Lewin made a sensational admission regarding Leeds that supporters will love.

Calvert-Lewin opens up on the ‘love’ he has received since joining Leeds

Although Calvert-Lewin has only scored one goal in his last nine Premier League appearances, the 29-year-old has led the line exceptionally well for Leeds this season.

His 10 Premier League goals so far this campaign have ensured his place in the England squad is well deserved, with Calvert-Lewin making an honest admission about the Whites in the aftermath of his international call-up.

Speaking to Leeds’ official website, Calvert-Lewin said: “It has been really nice, I cannot say I have ever felt love like it. It has been really special, and I have appreciated it a lot from the players and staff and the people at the club.

“I have definitely felt everyone’s genuine happiness for me, and it has been a really nice experience. We have still got a lot to achieve ourselves at club level, so I am still very much focused on my job here, and I am really proud that my time here has helped me to represent England again.”

After signing on a free transfer over the summer, many doubted whether Calvert-Lewin was a good enough signing, however his form this season has ensured that the 49ers’ risk has certainly paid off.

Data suggests Calvert-Lewin must improve if he wants to go to the World Cup

Whilst Leeds’ number nine will have the opportunity to impress Tuchel in training and the upcoming friendlies, Calvert-Lewin will know he needs to add to his Premier League tally between now and the end of the season in order to keep Leeds up and ensure he is on the plane for the World Cup.

  • Calvert-Lewin has not scored in his last six appearances for Leeds in all competitions
  • In his last four Premier League appearances, he has failed to score whilst accumulating an xG of 1.94
  • This wasteful form in front of goal now means Calvert-Lewin is underperforming his expected goals for the season, scoring 10 from an xG of 11.59 (Sofascore)

Hopefully, from Leeds’ perspective, the England call-up will give Calvert-Lewin a major boost of confidence to return to Leeds and finish the season strong, with the Whites needing their talisman to get back scoring sooner rather than later if they want to stay in the top flight.
