‘It will be difficult…’ – Leeds United handed brutal reality check as 49ers left to rue costly mistake

Leeds United spent over £100 million in the summer transfer window, but there were still gaping holes in the squad. Daniel Farke complained about the lack of quality up front.

The Whites managed to bring in just three attacking players during the summer for £18 million combined, as they got Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on free transfers. It was late in the window that the 49ers tried to address the lack of quality by trying to sign Bilal El Khannouss, Facundo Buonanotte and Harry Wilson.

Leeds eventually brought Buonanotte in January, but he has been poor. Farke is clearly not a fan, and there is every chance the Argentine midfielder returns to Brighton during the summer.

Leeds United set to miss out on major transfer target

Harry Wilson has been a named linked to Elland Road since last summer. The club had a deadline day bid for him rejected at the last minute. It was later revealed that Fulham made the decision to keep the player for this season. Wilson recently spoke about his future at the club, saying he was open to leaving. The midfielder’s contract at Craven Cottage expires this summer.

Leeds have been strongly linked, but Pete O’Rourke has said on Football Insider that the 28-year old could go elsewhere. Everton are said to be leading the chasing pack for the talented midfielder this summer.

“It will be difficult for them to try and win the race for his signature in the summer because you’ve got a lot of interest from other Premier League clubs as well.

“Everton are one of the clubs leading the hunt right now, it’s a real hard one to do for Leeds.

“If Leeds do not secure Premier League survival they would have no chance of signing someone like Harry Wilson because he’ll want to continue playing at the highest level possible.”

Wilson has 18 goal invovelments in all competitions this season, and will be highly sought after when the season comes to an end.

World Cup exit could see Harry Wilson make early decision

Wales failed to get a place in the final round of World Cup play-off fixtures last week, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This means Leeds quartet Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James will not be at this summer’s showpiece. Harry Wilson will also be absent, which means a decision on his future could be announced in months. If the midfielder had made the World Cup, his decision on a new club would have come just before the start of next season, but as it stands, he could make a decision earlier. There should be enough time to convince the midfielder of a move to Elland Road.
