Leeds United have known they have had a problem in attack since the summer. The Whites knew that coming up to the Premier League, they would need serious quality to stand a chance at survival.
Daniel Farke coached one of the best attacks in the Championship as the team hit the 100-point mark. The Leeds attack was spearheaded by Joel Piroe, flanked by Dan Jams and Manor Solomon that season. Since their Premier League journey began, none of the trio have been regular in the attack this campaign.
The 49ers decided to add Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha as center forward options in the transfer window. The two came to Elland Road on free transfers, and have proved to be some of the better signings this past summer – they have combined to score 16 goals in all competition. A recent report suggests that the club will be in the market for a new striker in the coming months.
Leeds United monitoring £25m-rated wonderkid
Strikers are not the only source of Leeds United’s goalscoring woes this season. Daniel Farke shifted to a 4-3-3 this campaign, dropping the number 10 and keeping the wingers. However, the production from wide areas has not impressed this campaign – all the options in that position have been really underwhelming. And this might be the reason why Farke opted to switch to wingbacks in the 3-5-2.
| Competition | Games Played | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bundesliga | 24 | 2 | 7 |
| DFB Pokal | 2 | 0 | 0 |
According to SportsBoom, Leeds will be in the market for a real difference maker out wide as they target Bozoumana Toure. Three Premier League clubs are said to be in the race for the Ivorian – Bournemouth and Everton being the other two. Per the report, all three clubs have sent scouts to track his progress at Hoffenheim this season.
Attack needs serious quality in the summer
The 49ers showed that they were serious about finding a new striker with their attempt to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen in January. But the move failed, and now they have put forward plans to get competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer. The striker is not the only player that needs competition; Dan James, Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson all need to be upgraded on. It will be costly, but if the club wants to take a huge step, splashing the cash on new attacking options is the way forward.
