Gabriel Gudmundsson has emerged as one of the most important players in the Leeds United squad this season and is expected to be key if they are to survive in the Premier League this season.
However, the Leeds defender had some of the supporters worried last week when he played through pain in Sweden’s 3-1 win over Ukraine in the semi-finals of the World Cup qualifier playoff semi-finals.
The defender was seen with an ice pack around his leg after the game, and it was clear that he had put his body on the line to keep Sweden’s World Cup dreams alive.
Gudmundsson insisted after the game that he would be ready to take on Poland in the World Cup qualifier final on Tuesday night despite suffering the injury scare against Ukraine.
Gabriel Gudmundsson issues a four-word statement
Daniel Farke has every reason to be worried about Gudmundsson picking up a fresh injury or aggravating the knock he suffered against Ukraine if he plays on Tuesday night.
Leeds need him to be fit for the last seven Premier League games of the season, and until he returns to Elland Road, the Whites will be sweating over his fitness.
However, Gudmundsson is not worried about what happens with Leeds at the moment and is fully focused on ensuring Sweden qualifies for the World Cup.
He has made it abundantly clear that he is fit and ready to be in the starting eleven in the big game against Poland.
Gudmundsson posted a photo on Instagram and wrote: “See you on Tuesday.”
Farke and the rest of the Leeds staff can only cross their fingers and hope that the defender returns from international duty, fit and ready to feature in the Premier League run-in.
Leeds need him in the last seven league games
Gabriel Gudmundsson has been a key figure since arriving in last summer’s transfer window, quickly establishing himself as one of the team’s most reliable performers.
He started the season looking defensively assured and had no trouble adjusting when Daniel Farke switched to a 5-3-2 midway through the campaign, slotting seamlessly into the wing-back role.

If he were to pick up an injury, Farke could turn to James Justin on the left, but there’s no doubt he’d much rather have the Swede fully fit for the run-in.
Leeds will be hoping to come through the break without any setbacks, but with Gudmundsson the type to put his body on the line, there’s always a concern they could lose a crucial player at the worst possible time.
